How to Make Your Own Trail Mix

This so easy, you don't need an oven or a microwave, and there is very
little clean up. This is an excellent snack for parties or if you like trail mix
and you don't like what is in the store bought one. You can customize this
however you want, and the fun part is that there are endless posibilities!
What You need:
A gallon size freezer bag or a big bowl
Sandwich bags or smaller bowls
A one cup measuring cup
A wooden spoon or the ability to shake
Clean hands
Nuts
M7&m's
Mini Marshmallows
Little pretzel sticks
Rice, corn, or wheat checks
Chocolate chips
Raisins
Anything else you might want to add
Also, you don't need to add everything that's on this list. I'd prefer to skip
the raisins and add a few different kinds of nuts such as peanuts, almonds,
and cassues. You can also use any kind of chocolate you want. You can
use dark, white, milk, or semisweet for the chocolate chips. I would use
dark chocolate m&m's and dark chocolate chips.
What to do:
Step 1. Gather all of your supplies before you start. It won't be fun to go
off searching for a measuring cup or a spoon in the middle of baking time.
Step 2. Wash your hands.
Step 3. Use your one cup measuring cup to measure out all of your
ingredients so you have an even amount of everything. If you take
handfuls of stuff, you may end up with more nuts than m&m's, and you
don't wanna deal with that. Measuring is very important when baking. You
can also double or tripple the recipe if you wish. If you have a big enough
bowl or bag, just add 2 or 3 cups of your ingredients. If you are using the
little skinny pretzel sticks or the cereal, you might want to take handfuls of
these as they may break if you scoop the measuring cup into the bag. So
when taking handfuls of things make sure you have clean hands.
Step 4. If using a zip block bag, close it, making sure there is no air and
shake. This so you don't have nuts at the top and pretzels at the bottom.
You want everyting mixed together. Before you shake, ayou also want to
make sure the bag is closed all the way so the contents doesn't spill out
while you're shaking the bag. If you are using a bowl, take a wooden
spoon and mix everything together until everything is incorporated.
Step 5. Devide the mix into small bowls or put in sandwich bags and serve.
Enjoy!

how easy, even a 5-year-old kid can do it! this is pointless! everyone, and I
mean everyone, know how to make their own trail mix! I know I do cuz my
trail mix... it was so gooooooood! I added some raisins, M&m's, sweet
chocolate chips, and a little surprise... almonds. and, you know those dried
frozen bananas? yup, added that to my trail mix! tasted amazing! :) but why
the easy stuff?

I don't like those dried bananas.

I started getting trail mix for work in case I'm hungry between meals. My brought mix just has little bits of dried apricots, sautanas, nuts and seeds (sunflower, pumpkin etc.)
It's prob cheaper to make my own actually minus the chocolate if it's supposed to be healthy. :)

Not being judgmental here, but it's c-a-s-h-e-w-s, not c-a-s-s-u-e-s. Thought you might want to know.

My personal favourite trail-mix-type snack is something my dad calls "munch". It's not his original recipe, though I used to think it was.

Basically you melt some margarine, then sprinkle a little onion salt, garlic powder, celery salt and a bit of Worcestershire sauce in. That's your topping. Then you get a bunch of dry goods (cherios, rice checks, pretzels, shelled peanuts), put 'em in a big roasting pan or something, drizzle a little topping over the whole shebang and bake it a bit. Take it out after about half an hour, sprinkle some more, shake a little so your topping settles, then bake some more. Do that for two to three hours until most or all of your topping is gone.
You can adjust the topping to the way you like it. if you prefer garlic, add more garlic powder. If you like shreddies instead of checks, go for it. it's flexible.
And it goes without saying that this isn't exactly healthy. But it's quite tasty most of the time.
The reason I'm not giving an exact recipe is because my dad does it by guesswork, and thus every batch is a little different. Frustrates me to no end, and I simply haven't tried making it enough by myself to figure out a recipe that works for me. I haven't yet met anyone who hates it, mind you.

I need to try that, Greg. Sounds positively yummy!!!

Here's an easy bits & bites / nuts and bolts type recipe, similar to Greg's Dad's Munch
recipe:

I didn't know how to make trail mix, and hate all the nuts I don't want, in the store-bought ones. Thank you, Apple Girl! I'm grateful.
We do a kind of buffet at Christmas time, and I might have to do this. Grin! Of course, I'll change things up a tad, cause, I'm not much on some things. But, I'll make a good trail mix, and shock my family. Of course, I'll try to warn them, cause I don't want any unexpected heart-attacks from shock. LOL
Blessings, Happy Thanksgiving!

Yeah that's the good thing you can customize this however you want. If you
want it healthier you can minus the chocolate and add nuts, raisins, and
some dried fruit. I think it is cheaper to do this than get the store bought
one because with the store bought one everything is already mixed together.

Yes greg; sure does sound nice. :)

If you like a little sweet with your salty, here's something you can do with my dad's recipe. He hates this, and I know others who would too, but yeah.
Once it's all finished baking and has cooled, chuck some raisins into it. Then you'll have salty pretzels, peanuts, checks/shreddies, cherios...and little bursts of sweetness from the raisins. Whatever you do, for heaven's sake don't bake the raisins into it. And do wait till it's cool. You could probably substitute dried banana chips as well, or some other dried berries. It's still going to be a bit of texture craziness if you do this, but otherwise it might work.

How about adding some honey roasted peanuts to it, Greg, in place of the raisins? I'm wondering whether it would work in your oppinion. I don't mean to bake the nuts into it, of course. lol. I ask because I like the idea of sweet and salty, but I hate, hate, hate raisins. ewwww., as far as I'm concerned. Love honey-roasted nuts though. Ooo, I wonder if salted cashews might do the trick instead. They're naturally a swweter type of nut... Hmmm.

I'm heartened to see a positive board topic.

This munch sounds like my kinda stuff. When baked, what texture is this supposed to have? I'd like to give this a shot.

I'd second Bernadetta's suggestion about adding honey roasted peanuts or similar.

I've found a recipe for candied almonds, but you could easily substitute the almonds with
walnuts or cashews, or pecans or even macadamia nuts.

Link to the recipe is here:

Actually, forget that recipe... there's no sweet in it.

This one, from allrecipes.com, is way easier and is made only with nuts, sugar and a little
bit of water

Someone in Youtube land also made a video about the cooking process, to go along with
that recipe:
